Toothache, what to do?


A sharp and unusual dental pain? A strong and sudden sensitivity to temperature changes? You are surely the victim of a toothache!

Don't panic, this common, sometimes even chronic problem can be prevented and the pain relieved!

Where does toothache come from?

Characterized by intense, diffuse and continuous or acute and pulsating dental pain, toothache can affect adult teeth as well as baby teeth. It is most often the result of inflammation of the dental pulp (inner part of the tooth, just under the enamel ) due to the intrusion of bacteria (this is also called pulpitis 😉). The dental pulp is crossed by many small nerves and blood vessels, which explains the occurrence of very intense pain when they are stimulated during a toothache.

Pulpitis can be caused by several factors, such as:


  • Tooth decay: it remains one of the most common causes of toothache. Caries results in the destruction of the hard tissues of the tooth, caused by enzymes or acids produced by bacteria. 🦠 When decay sets in and grows, it can attack dental pulp and cause pulpitis.
  • Dental trauma: Certain shocks or sudden changes in temperature can also cause irritation of the dental pulp, and lead to pulpitis.💥

Toothache is very unpleasant and painful, even disabling for some people, since it can complicate eating or even speaking. 🤕 In any case, don't wait to react and take the necessary measures!

Are there any aggravating factors for toothache?

Yes, and even several. Various elements can increase the risk of toothache. These factors include those that promote the installation and development of dental caries, including:

  • Poor oral hygiene 🪥
  • Alcohol consumption 🍷
  • Consumption of very sweet foods 🍫
  • The consumption of foods rich in acids 🍋
  • Smoking 🚬
  • The stress that aggravates mouth pain 🤯

Despite the fact that they are most often temporary, toothache can also persist and gain in intensity. This is why it is important to treat the cause of the dental pain as soon as possible to avoid the occurrence of complications. 😰 Indeed, a toothache that is not taken care of, or not taken care of soon enough can become irreversible. This phenomenon is characterized by acute pain in the affected tooth(s), which can result in the necrosis of the dental pulp (i.e. the death of this tissue ☠️). Unfortunately, the only solution will then be to have the affected tooth removed.

How to relieve and treat a toothache?

To calm a toothache, if it is mild, the first step is to make an appointment with your dentist so that he can properly treat pulpitis, the inflammation that causes dental pain. Analgesics, antibiotics or even anti-inflammatories can nevertheless be recommended to calm the pain if it proves to be too unbearable. 💊

Some “grandmother's remedies” also exist, involving natural anti-inflammatory or anesthetic active ingredients such as cloves or certain essential oils (bay leaf, tea tree or clove). 🌿

In more serious cases, the practice of dental surgery by a dentist - in particular to treat trauma or dental caries - may be necessary. 💉

Can toothaches be avoided?

The occurrence of a toothache can be avoided by limiting the risk factors. It is essential to adopt good eating habits, a healthy lifestyle and an adequate oral hygiene routine. 👌 Some measures to apply to be sure to take good care of your teeth can be:
